Common questions
Dengue FAQ: clear answers without platelet panic
These answers are general education. Individual decisions depend on the patient’s examination, illness day, reports, medicines, and risk factors.
Is a platelet count of 50,000 dangerous?+
A count of 50,000/µL needs clinical interpretation, but the number alone does not show whether dengue is severe or whether transfusion is needed. Doctors also assess bleeding, circulation, warning signs, urine output, hematocrit, the platelet trend, and the patient’s overall condition.
When do low platelets require transfusion?+
Routine prophylactic platelet transfusion is not recommended simply because the platelet count is low. Transfusion decisions belong in a clinical setting and depend on bleeding, hemodynamic status, coagulation findings, planned urgent procedures, and current guidance.
When is dengue most dangerous?+
For patients who progress to severe disease, the critical phase commonly begins around defervescence—when fever settles—and usually lasts about 24–48 hours. Warning signs during this period need urgent medical assessment.
When should the dengue NS1 test be done?+
NS1 is most useful early in illness. Indian national guidance uses NS1 for samples collected on days 1–5, while CDC guidance includes NS1 or molecular testing within the first 7 days, usually alongside IgM. The exact test should follow illness day and the local laboratory algorithm.
When does dengue IgM become useful?+
IgM often becomes detectable around days 4–5. It is commonly combined with NS1 or molecular testing during the first week and becomes the primary CDC-recommended test after day 7. A positive single IgM can reflect a recent presumptive infection and must be interpreted clinically.
Can an early negative dengue test rule out dengue?+
No. A negative NS1, molecular, or IgM result early in illness does not always exclude dengue. If symptoms or warning signs continue, a clinician may recommend repeat or paired testing and continued clinical monitoring.
What should I drink during dengue?+
Take regular, tolerable oral fluids when a clinician says home care is appropriate. ORS provides water with electrolytes and glucose; water, soups, and other suitable fluids can also contribute. Do not force excessive fluids, especially with heart or kidney disease.
Do papaya leaf juice or goat milk treat dengue?+
Neither is an established treatment in current WHO, CDC, or Indian national dengue guidance. Do not let a food, juice, or herbal preparation replace appropriate hydration, monitoring, testing, or medical care, and stop any preparation that worsens nausea or vomiting.
Can I take ibuprofen or aspirin for dengue fever?+
Aspirin and NSAIDs such as ibuprofen should be avoided because they can increase bleeding risk. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is generally preferred when appropriate, but use it only as directed and seek individual advice if you have liver disease or take other medicines.
How long can weakness last after dengue?+
Appetite, urine output, and general condition usually improve in the recovery phase, but tiredness can continue for several weeks. Persistent, severe, or worsening symptoms need reassessment rather than being assumed to be normal recovery.
