HIV testing and the window period

A reactive screening result requires confirmation through an approved testing pathway. A very recent exposure may require repeat testing.

• Test choice and timing depend on the exposure date and test type.
• Consent, confidentiality and counselling are central to testing.
• Do not delay PEP assessment while waiting for a later HIV test.
• A positive self-test or screening test is not the final diagnosis.

PEP, PrEP and prevention

PEP is emergency prevention after a possible exposure; PrEP is planned prevention for people with ongoing risk.

• PEP must begin as soon as possible and no later than 72 hours when indicated.
• Baseline and follow-up HIV, hepatitis and STI tests are planned individually.
• PEP should not be assembled from another person’s ART tablets.
• People with repeated risk can discuss transition to PrEP.

A possible high-risk exposure within 72 hours needs urgent assessment today, not a routine future appointment.

Confidential STI / STD evaluation

Genital discharge, ulcers, painful urination, rash or partner diagnosis deserves non-judgmental medical assessment.

• Syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia, herpes and other infections need different tests and treatment.
• Partners may need testing or treatment to prevent reinfection.
• Avoid taking incomplete antibiotic combinations from a chemist.
• Severe testicular pain, pelvic pain with fever or widespread rash needs prompt in-person care.

ART, viral load and U=U

Effective ART can suppress HIV, protect health and allow a long, active life.

• Viral load is central to monitoring treatment response.
• Sustained undetectable viral load prevents sexual transmission—U=U.
• Undetectable does not mean cured or HIV-negative.
• Marriage, pregnancy and healthy parenthood can be planned with appropriate care.
